New Music Review 10.22.13

polica-shulamithThe new music just keeps on comin’… and we’ve got our weekly wrap up for you. What’s new? What’s cool? Read on…

PolicaShulamith (Mom + Pop) Sorry, we just can’t figure out how to get that proper “c” in Polica’s spelling, but you already know who we are talking about. The new album is a shimmering version of what trip hop should be in this icy computer age. Mega fan Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Volcano Choir) gets to join on the track “Tiff”, and otherwise, Channy Leaneagh handles the haunting vocals and moody pace all on her own.

Best CoastFade Away (Jewel City) More like a long EP, and a release on singer Bethany Cosentino’s new label, Best Coast are back to doing what they do so well: fuzzy sweet pop with lyrics that betray the sunnyness of the music (sometimes). While the fact that this isn’t their first outing gives them an unavoidable polish, the overall vibe is still closer to that first glimpse we got of Best Coast a few years back now.

JD Samson & MenLabor (Men Make Music) If the name is vaguely familiar, it’s because JD Samson was one of the trio that was Le Tigre, Kathleen Hanna’s electro punk outfit. This particular outing is less political than previous offerings, instead more of a personal struggle through identity and art, in dance party form. So it’s sassy and it’s fun, with bite.
