New Music Review 1.21.14

together-PANGEA-Badillac-608x608This week we check out killer new releases from together PANGEABadillac, along with WarpaintWarpaint, and MogwaiRave Tapes.

together PANGEABadillac (Harvest/Burger) – L.A.’s own scruffy rockmeisters, have finally released their catchy new record on the newly re-launched Harvest Records (which put out the first three Iron Maiden records back in the day, and now have Morrissey, Death Grips and Banks on their roster). The long wait was worth it, because the band has come through with clearer melodies and more depth to their songs. “Cat Man” and “Offer” are darker and more ominous than the standard party punk songs of the last record, which sets them apart from the current crop of bands who are running that vibe into the ground.

WarpaintWarpaint (Rough Trade) – Reviews on the highly anticipated self-titled new record from these four ladies have been split… Some are saying it’s too unfocused and “jammy”, while others are saying it’s brave and uncompromising (see the review from Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES: – I agree with Lauren. It took three years to finish, and most of it came together in a house the band shared in Joshua Tree, CA while experimenting with new sounds and vibes.  As a musician, I couldn’t imagine a better way to write a record. The results bring forth a hazy feel, but one with plenty of beats and vocal melodies to keep you tapping your foot.

MogwaiRave Tapes (Sub Pop) – One of the most memorable experiences of my various Coachella weekends was wandering to the stage where Mogwai was creating a maelstrom of beautiful music at sunset that overshadowed all else around me. This talented band of Glasgow musicians creates mostly instrumental epic soundscapes, like Explosions In The Sky, but this time around it’s a bit more electronic, without losing the organic feel of musicians interacting and creating in the moment. Their live show is unforgettable, and they’re playing Coachella again this year, so if you’re going, don’t miss them.
