New Music Review 6.24.14

This week, we check out  Tijuana Panthers Wayne Interest and Lykke Li I Never Learn.

Tijuana Panthers – Wayne Interest (Innovative Leisure) – These surf-rockers from the Long Beach, CA area have graduated to a fuller sound with deeper lyrics on their third effort. While they manage to keep the summer-y feel-good vibes of their past records, there are more melodies and a psychedelic feel, and the subject matter swerves away from the beach and towards introspection.

Lykke Li – I Never Learn (LL/Atlantic) – If you’re feeling sad and lonely, you will identify with the longing echo-y vibes from Lykke Li on her third record, which supposedly is the last of a trilogy. Sometimes the lyrics don’t match the despair and sonic peaks of the music, but this will help you through some rough times, if you’re going through them now or in the future.

New Music Report 6.18.14

A bunch of new music has been hitting the shelves this month while we were revamping our l’il ole website, so let’s catch up on some of it!

First Aid KitStay Gold (Jagadamba) These Swedish sisters really have that alt country pseudo hippie thing down… How are they not from San Francisco? They ain’t, but they can still utter the phrase “keep on keepin’ on” without making everyone burst out into uncontrollable laughter. Groovy.

Jack WhiteLazaretto (Third Man) The second solo album from Jack White has finally arrived, with the expected bluesy tones, the surprising musical touchstones, the rootsy harmonies, barstompers, haunting grooves and so much more… How he makes his jumble of influences cohesive is what makes him continually interesting.

The AntlersFamiliars (Anti) Dreamy, comtemplative indie pop which leans into the atmospheric and has a melancholy undercurrent of, um , jazz. Well, just trumpets, actually, used quite well.

Parquet CourtsSunbathing Animals (Mom & Pop) They are so ‘90s, but not. I mean,  they race through some tracks with such ferocity that you can feel the guy next to you slamming into you, but others recall the bounciest moment of noisy indie fun of that college rock era. And a previous era’s druggy nonchalance.  And another era’s intelligent artsiness. So much to get form this one!

White Lung  – Deep Fantasy (Domino) Loud, fast, and outta control… actually, clean, rowdy, and brilliant. Punk rock intelligentsia? Riot grrl political assertiveness? Indie rock metal edge? All of that. So familiar but not. Kinda great.

Shotgun Beach Party

Sunday 11pm-12am Pacific Time

Shotgun BeachAfter being upset by corporate control of the airwaves, Jesse decided to try helping to correct it, and has been a part of Southern California’s radio scene since the late 1990s. He came up with the phrase “shotgun beach party” around that same time, not knowing quite what it meant – he still doesn’t know, but furrows his brow in contemplation of it while pressing play and occasionally drinking Martinis. Perhaps the implication of a shotgun beach party is the idea, like a similarly described wedding, that you are compelled to do something – enjoy yourself, in this case; it will be to your detriment if youresist the the sounds, the energy, and the dramatic lighting. Don’t limit your expectations to rockabilly and surf rock, though you can definitely count on them to frame the scene along with psychobilly, exotica, garage rock, classic and experimental, serious and novelty, traditional and strange.

Throwing Muses @ the Bootleg

Kristin and Tanya, together again! Throwing Muses fans reveled in the brief sisterly reunion of Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donnelly at two recent Throwing Muses shows in Los Angeles last week. Tanya Donnelly opened, doing a sweet and stripped down set of her solo work along with some Belly and TM gems. Then the current trio version of the Muses hit the stage (with original drummer Dave Narcizo and long time bassist Bernard Georges), playing from their latest release Purgatory/Paradise before bringing Tanya onstage again to join in for a few songs. The mood was so jubilant that the band even pulled off two encores, one which was a surprise as the lights were already starting to go up… That’s dedication, from both the fans and the band. Thanks to listener Richard McDuffie for all the wonderful photos!
