New Music Review 2.04.14

homepage_large.40fbbb3aHmmmm… seems there has been some new music creeping onto our airwaves! Here are some items we are checking out.

Dum Dum GirlsToo True (Sub Pop) Dee Dee is back with an appropriately melancholy yet  dreamily retro collection of songs on the new Dum Dum Girls LP.  Doing a gothy take on the Spector sound is the thing, and it always sounds lovely if not necessarily new. The Dum Dum Girls certainly nail it.

Broken BellsAfter the Disco (Columbia) The sophomore release from Danger Mouse and James Mercer show the boys definitely getting their groove on. It’s almost a lazy after party take on a night at the club, filled with Mercer’s Shins style melodies fused with some sexy synths. Turn down the lights for this one.

Xiu XiuAngel Guts: Red Classroom (Polyvinyl) Another slightly bothersome yet slightly pop-ish album from Jamie Stewart, filled with the bleak moments you’ve come to expect while still delivering beautiful sounds… mostly. An acquired taste, for sure.

Robert DeLong at the El Rey

1656186_618114734922504_1355639958_nHey, did you catch Robert DeLong at the El Rey last week? Did he make you f**king dance? Although he is considered an EDM artist in some circles, he still wowed a capacity crowd with an actual band and actual instruments, and made the whole place f**king dance. Tracks like “Happy” and “Here” worked the crowd up, so when he came back for an encore of “Global Concepts,” the place was primed to explode. With all that f**king dancing, of course.
