GET AMONGST IT: THE CHECK YO PONYTAIL MOVIE

GetAmongstIt

“When you have a dream, you have to keep fighting, you have to see it through…because why else are you living?”

Franki Chan, beloved owner of IHEARTCOMIX & CHECK YO PONYTAIL, is on another mission: to make a Check Yo Ponytail movie. Documenting the first ever Check Yo Ponytail Tour back in 2011, the movie follows Franki and the IHC crew along with touring artists including Big Freedia and The Death Set through the ambitious, risky, and successful tour and its ongoing efforts that we are familiar with today.

Franki and the IHC crew are a model for the 21st Century Independent Artist – fueled by ideas, driven by risk and finding success. Donation prizes include autographed vinyl, personal portraits, limited edition silk screen posters, a house show and MORE. The crowd-funding Kickstarter ends December 23 @ 9PM. The more dough they can source, the better the film, and the bigger the possibilities!

Head over to Get Amongst It: The Story of the First Check Yo Ponytail to catch the world premiere of the trailer and become a backer!

Oh-Land-Wish-Bone-2013-1500x1500

New Music: Oh Land

Oh-Land-Wish-Bone-2013-1500x1500Oh Land – Wish Bone (Federal Prism)

Putting Oh Land’s music in a descriptive box is tough. She’s kind of fabulously weird and enigmatic like Bjork, she makes charming and mystical electropop that you can (sometimes) dance to and she doesn’t seem much concerned with crafting obvious pop or radio hits. Yet those exact traits make this Danish beauty so intriguing. Released on Dave Sitek’s boutique label (and also produced by the TV on the Radio guitarist), her third effort is not an immediately infectious listen like her last disc or lauded singles. Rather, repeated spins reveal more of its hidden charms. “My Boxer” was a bit of a head-scratch introduction to the record, with its staccato hip-hop beats and half-rapped vocals, but similarly produced tracks like the second single “Renaissance Girls” and “Love A Man Dead” work much better. Probably the most instantly catchy is the light funk of “Pyromaniac,” with its breezy beats and understated horn section. The piano-lounge strains of “Next Summer” and “Sleepy Town” are probably the foremost examples of her ethereal vocal prowess. Another standout is the symphonic “Green Card,” which was co-written by Sia. Thankfully, Sitek’s production never overshadows her ardent quirkiness, and he lets her melodramatic freak flag fly high. All told, Oh Land delivers a wholly seductive but playful listen. Paul V. for The Independent FM
